Our Proposal

A Sustainable Chlor-Alkali Solution for the Western Cape

Project Overview

The Green Chemicals Consortium (Pty) Ltd proposes the establishment of a Chlor-Alkali facility in the Western Cape to ensure a reliable regional supply of Chlorine—a critical component in potable water and wastewater treatment. This facility will strengthen water security and reduce dependence on distant manufacturers in Gauteng, addressing one of the region’s most significant industrial and environmental vulnerabilities.

Product Scope and Regional Benefits

The plant will produce Chlorine to meet and exceed the Western Cape’s water treatment requirements. Surplus production capacity allows for the manufacturing of Calcium Chloride (CaClâ‚‚), using Limestone sourced from the Northern Cape. A valuable by-product, food-grade COâ‚‚, will also be generated, helping to alleviate shortages in the carbonated beverage and bottling industry across the region.

Economic and Industrial Impact

The project will stimulate local economic growth through job creation, supply chain development, and the establishment of a regional chemical manufacturing hub. Importantly, the production of Caustic Soda alongside Chlorine provides an additional advantage, as South Africa currently imports both Caustic Soda and Calcium Chloride, making this initiative strategically significant for national industry.

Stakeholder Value and Sustainability

Beyond addressing water security and industrial supply challenges, the Chlor-Alkali facility represents a profitable and sustainable venture. It will create long-term value for stakeholders, from local communities and industry partners to regional and national government entities, contributing directly to South Africa’s broader goals of industrial self-sufficiency and environmental resilience.
